For those familiar with CAIR-Washington, it will come as no surprise that CAIR relies heavily on the generous time and efforts of a dedicated number of volunteers and interns. Whether it is maintaining the CAIR-Washington website, registering people to vote, or spearheading a Media Watch project, volunteers and interns provide vital services which support and sustain the mission and work of CAIR-Washington. Simply said, CAIRwould not be CAIR without them.
In pursuit of recruiting more of these fine, generous, and very important volunteers,CAIR-Washington's Civil Rights Coordinator, Jennifer Gist packed up CAIR materials and journeyed to the University of Washington's Carlson Center on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. The Carlson Center, short for the Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center, invited a number of non-profit organizations to attend an internship fair to recruit volunteers and interns. A number of classes at the University of Washington (UW) have a service-learning component, in which students are required to engage with the community outside the classroom for 3-5 hours per week. CAIR-Washington has already received the help of two UW service-learning interns this year, and sent Jennifer to the internship fair to recruit more.
Though recruiting students was the main priority, Jennifer also spent time networking with representatives of other organizations, such as One World Now (a language and study abroad program for high school students) and National Archives, to discuss possibilities for collaboration in the future. With a couple new business cards and a long list of students interested in volunteer and internship opportunities, CAIR-Washington closed the day with several promising new possibilities for volunteers and partnerships.
