Snohomish Muslim & Christian Groups Hosting “Sharing Our Stories - Meet Your Muslim Neighbors” Event

(SNOHOMISH, WA, 10/17/19) - Local Muslim and Christian groups are hosting “ Sharing Our Stories ” – a community conversation exploring common ground and addressing anti-Muslim rhetoric – in Snohomish this coming Tuesday, Oct. 22, 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

The event was organized in response to the local pushback against the building of an Islamic Center in Snohomish.

“Unfortunately, there’s been rumors and fears being spread about the Muslim community here in Snohomish,” said Rev. Terry Kyllo, one of the event organizers and founder of the Western Washington ministry Neighbors in Faith . “We’re hoping this event can bring people together to help them realize that what we have in common is so much greater than what separates us.”

Zahra Abidi, president of the board for the Islamic Center, said she is encouraged by the outpouring of support the Muslim community has received so far.

“Snohomish County is home to so many diverse populations,” she said. “We’re excited to have ‘Sharing Our Stories’ come to Snohomish to help people have the much-needed conversations and ask the questions they might be too afraid to ask. We want folks to come out and meet their Muslim neighbors and find the many commonalities we share!”

“Sharing Our Stories” was successfully launched in Tacoma last month, after the Seattle office of Weber Shandwick, a global communications firm, selected MAPS-AMEN (American Muslim Empowerment Network) and CAIR Washington for an impact service project and created three videos featuring local American Muslims. Snohomish is the second stop on the campaign.
