(SEATTLE, WA, 11/14/18) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations -- Washington (CAIR-WA), a chapter of the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, expressed concern over new data showing alarming spike in US hate crimes—including a 32% increase in Washington state in 2017.
“The national political climate and rhetoric coming from the highest political offices is normalizing hate and bigotry,” says Masih Fouladi, Executive Director for CAIR-WA “And we’re seeing the results of that at every level—including increases in street harassment, anti-Muslim bullying, attacks on houses of worship and violent hate incidents and crimes.”
CAIR-WA tracks hate incidents, provides legal support to victims of hate incidents, offers Bystander Intervention Trainings to help train the community in how to respond to hate incidents and is conducting a statewide survey of Muslim youth to track anti-Muslim bullying in Washington.
