In January, 2013, CAIR-WA met with Imam Abdi*, an imam of a mosque in Washington State, to discuss the status of his green card application. Though he arrived to the U.S. as a refugee in 2005 and then applied for Permanent Resident status in 2006, Imam Abdi continues what has been a six year struggle to see that his I-485 Application to Adjust to Permanent Residency is processed. The standard time of approval for an I-485 document is four months.
Puget Sound area resident Kareem* received a startling voicemail on June 13, 2013 from a man claiming to be “Mike Anderson” of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The man stated that Kareem was “wanted” by the FBI and should turn himself in immediately. He stated that if Kareem if he didn’t surrender himself to his local police department, he would be detained and possibly arrested.
On January 16, 2013, Hamza*, an IT executive, e-mailed CAIR-WA explaining that the FBI had contacted him wanting information about someone who had been hired at his mosque, located in Washington State. The FBI expressed interest in learning more about the person hired because they had received several complaints about him.
In 2013, Ms. Nicole Jones*, a middle school teacher in Washington State, wanted to teach her class about the impact of the attacks on September 11, 2001. During the lesson, a student asked her “why are Muslims killing Americans and which Muslims are doing this?”
Nihal contacted CAIR-WA after she was terminated from her job at a retail store in Seattle.
On January 3rd, 2013, a community member contacted CAIR-WA to report graffiti on a Puget Sound area Islamic school’s property.
On June 19, 2013, CAIR-Washington welcomed four new interns into their office. The latest batch of interns Shelby Bautista, Francis Wilson, Tooba Dilshad, and Monica Parry, contributed to what is now the largest class of summer interns in CAIR-WA history. In total, CAIR-WA’s 14 interns and volunteer office team members will complete over 2,500 volunteer hours each month during this summer.
