(SEATTLE, WA, 07/01/2022) - The Washington chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) is proud to announce that on June 23, 2022 Governor Inslee issued a proclamation that July 2022 will be recognized as Muslim American Heritage Month in the state of Washington.

CAIR-WA urged Governor Inslee’s office to create a state-recognized month celebrating Muslim Americans in Washington, which is home to over 50 mosques and growing Muslim communities, including immigrant and refugee communities from Afghanistan, Somalia, Vietnam, and many others. Muslim American Heritage Month in 2022 will be a time to celebrate the contributions of Muslim Americans in Washington.

In a statement, CAIR-WA Policy Associate Najma Osman said:

“This July, and all year long, CAIR Washington is proud to celebrate the diversity of our Muslim communities in Washington state and will continue to advocate on their behalf. The road to building a more equitable Washington is a long one where true change requires dismantling systems of oppression, and we have a long way to go. I encourage everyone in Washington State to join us in commemorating this special observance.“

The Muslim American Heritage Month proclamation signed by Governor Inslee is a commitment to combat the prejudice and persistent discrimination faced by Muslims throughout Washington state. With the rise of global Islamophobia, anti-Muslim state policies, and hate incidents at our places of worship, it's long overdue that we recognize the contributions Muslims have made for centuries and celebrate our diverse heritage.

CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos
