(SEATTLE, WA, 1/11/2024) – The Washington chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomes the arrest of a suspect in connection to the death of 31-year-old Abdulkadir Shariff Gedi on January 3 in Edmonds, WA. .
“We are relieved for the family, for rideshare drivers and the community that there has been progress on this tragic case,” said Imraan Siddiqi, CAIR-WA’s executive director. “We thank the Edmonds Police Department and the City of Edmonds for their hard work and communication with the affected communities.”
According to the Edmonds Police Department, Gedi had dropped off a rideshare fare minutes before he was shot turning left at the corner of 236th Street Southwest and Edmonds Way. He later died of his injuries. Gedi is the sixth rideshare driver killed on the job in the Seattle Metro area since 2019.
The Seattle Rideshare Drivers Association, a driver organization founded to represent the interest of Uber and Lyft drivers In Seattle, are raising funds to help with funeral costs for Gedi, who was active in his mosque, Abubakr Islamic Center of WA in Tukwila.
CAIR-WA previously called for justice in the case.
The Edmonds Police Department has not yet released information about a possible motive for this violence.
